

He was born in San Francisco, California to parents Josephine and Glen on Tuesday, December 17, 1946.
Dave enjoyed classic cars, like his 70’s black and blue Chevy Camaro and playing guitar. He made a career of the latter, beginning his musical training at the age of ten and going on to earn a bachelor's degree in Classical Guitar and a master's degree in music theory and composition from California State University, Hayward.
Besides performing in many exclusive supper clubs, hotels, country clubs, playing recording sessions, he has worked with many fine big band leaders such as Ernie Heckscher and Ray Hackett. He has backed up such artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Hope, Rosemary Clooney, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Jimmy Rodgers, Nancy Ames, Florence Henderson, Ethel Herman, Nipsey Russell, and more.
He opened Today’s Music and founded Dave Smith’s School of Music in Las Vegas.
A gifted and dedicated teacher, he left a lasting impact on his students through his instruction in Jazz, Blues, and Rock guitar. He also published a series of guitar theory and method books.
Dave’s family and friends will always remember his love, jokes, and generosity. He is survived by his two sons, David and Miles; brother, Tom Smith; two stepsons, Danny and Adam; two grandchildren, Jenna and Tyler; and the love of his life for 33 years, Karen Krametbauer.
