Conrad was born Sept 16, 1944 in California and grew up in Arizona. He served in the US Marine Corps Forces Reserve, lived and worked in California, Colorado, and Georgia before founding the Charleston Mint in 1974. While establishing his private company, he traveled extensively, researching, designing and producing products for clients including the Dept. of Defense, US Marshal's Service, Smithsonian Institution, NASA, the Bicentennial Commission of the US Constitution, US embassies worldwide, the Ellis Island Foundation, and Disney. He became involved in charity work through the Mint, raising over $300 million for groups including: Toys for Tots, Operation Desert Storm, and various literacy, scholarship, and fine arts centers.
Conrad often travelled with his tennis racquet to volley with local club pros. He served as tennis director for Heritage USA, and started the first International Christian Tennis Association. He once stated his greatest achievement was acing Pancho Gonzales in a Pro Am tennis tournament in front of a packed crowd.
He cherished distributing bibles as a Gideon where he served as chaplain, and considered his most important title that of Christian. He taught his boys to play chess and tennis and did his best to pass along to them his deep Christian beliefs. He was grateful that the “little company” he'd started sustained them as they grew and now lead as their own.
Conrad retired and moved to The Villages in 2003 where he immersed himself in tennis, golf, pickleball, table tennis, swimming, bowling, billiards, and golf cart rides with his beloved pug “Tank”. In 2017, the Lord led him to Susan Blomenberg, aka Susan Victoria Neiman, and together they shared a deep Christian bond and love for each other. They married Feb 14, 2018. She survives.
He was predeceased by his parents Philip and Dorothy and sister Eleanor, and is survived by brother A.J., sons Graham (Carrie) and Caleb, grandsons Taylon, Isaac, and Ezra.
Friends are invited to celebrate his life and memories on Tuesday July 16th 1:00pm at Hope Lutheran Church central campus (Morse & 466) in The Villages.
