Vincent Paul Portera

When asked by anyone who came into contact with Vince Portera, the same quote was repeated over and over by family, friends, colleagues and even acquaintances “he’s the nicest guy”. Not only was this perception true it was genuine, gentle and sincere. Vince Portera passed away peacefully on July 30th, 2026, at the age of 89 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Born in San Francisco, California in 1937 alongside with the completion of the Golden Gate Bridge, began a symmetry with the Bay Area that would last a lifetime. Paul and Grace Portera were blessed with their son Vince on March 12th. Vince grew up in San Jose, California, which would be his home until 1999, prior to moving to Sacramento. With a passion for basketball, Vince would advance his skills to the varsity basketball team, the Buccaneers at Campbell High School. After graduating high school, Vince served his country honorably with the Army reserves, stationed at Fort Ord in Monterey, California. After which, Vince served with the National Guard for a combined total of 8 years’ service to the United States of America.

As adulthood set, his passion transferred from basketball to bowling, like his father before him, Vince’s skill set was advanced. Many team and individual accolades affirm this in the trophy area at his childhood home on Bellerose Drive.

Lockheed Martin was fortunate to have Vince for 32 years as a United States Mail Clerk. Always friendly, kind and giving to his colleagues, who in turn adored him back, gave him the loving moniker of “Vinny”.

Loyalty was a theme throughout Vince’s life and one of many examples would be encapsulated with the San Francisco 49ers football club. Established in 1946, Vince was a die-hard fan, literally since day one, of his beloved franchise. Whether sitting in the uncomfortable confines of Kezar Stadium or the frigid cold of Candlestick Park, this season ticket holder was present. Feast or famine, Vinny was always there adorned in the apparel of his favorite team. There was only one thing that Vince loved more than these pastimes, his family.

Vince’s true passion and loyalty in life was his family. Silently sacrificing and giving his all to ensure a roof was over their heads, food on the table and clothes to warm them. Vince would go without his own creature comforts to ensure that his family did. His absolute love for his wife and 7 children, grandchildren and great grandchildren knew no limit and no end.

Though he is no longer here, this loving and caring son, father, grandfather and great grandfather, who always provided unconditional love without fear or favor will live on forever known as “the nicest person I ever met”. This is Vince’s greatest gift and legacy to us all.
