Kim D. Wood

Kim D. Wood passed away on September 2, 2026, at the age of 68. He was born on February 21, 1958, in St. Paul, Indiana. Kim was raised with an appreciation for Christian values, including kindness, generosity, and love for family, principles that remained evident throughout his life. During his early childhood, Kim's family relocated to Florida, where he developed a lifelong love of hunting, fishing, and the outdoors, interests that would remain central to his life for decades to come.

Kim graduated from Lakewood High School, Class of 1976. One of his fondest memories from that time was the purchase of the “Green Hornet,” a 1956 Chevrolet Stepside pickup powered by a 6-cylinder engine and a three-on-the-tree manual transmission. More than just a vehicle, the truck became a special father-and-son project. As they worked on its restoration, Kim's father patiently taught him valuable mechanical skills, and the many hours they spent side by side became some of his most treasured memories. Their hard work transformed the weathered white pickup into the green classic affectionately known as the "Green Hornet," a lasting reminder of their shared accomplishments and enduring bond.

Following high school, Kim studied Police Science, Criminology, and Aeronautics at St. Petersburg College. He went on to enjoy a distinguished career in aviation, serving as a captain for Reno Air, a position he often described as “the most fun job ever.” He later continued his career with American Airlines, traveling extensively throughout the United States and South America. His love of flying, sense of adventure, and dedication to his profession defined much of his working life.

Beyond his career, Kim's love of hunting and fishing provided some of his greatest joys. Whether in the woods or on the water alongside his father, brother Todd, and nephew Trevor, he treasured the camaraderie, traditions, and memories those adventures created.

Following his retirement from aviation, Kim founded Wood Bros. Sporting Arms & Repair in Knoxville, Tennessee, a business that earned a reputation for exceptional gunsmithing and craftsmanship. He took great pride in restoring treasured family heirlooms and helping customers preserve and enhance firearms that held both practical and sentimental value.

Kim was a devoted uncle to his niece and three nephews, always taking an active role in their lives. Known for his generosity, he bought each of them their first car, encouraged and supported them in their pursuits, and created countless cherished memories through his laughter, kindness, and love.

He is survived by his loving mother, Barbara; his brothers, Jeff and Todd Wood; his sister, Helena Mongan; his nephews, Zachary and Samuel Mongan and Trevor Wood; and his niece, Tiffany Wood DeSimone (Jonathan DeSimone). His niece and nephews held a special place in his heart and will forever cherish his generosity, humor, encouragement, and love.

Kim was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Wood, whose love, guidance, and example helped shape the man he became. The memories they shared together continue to bring comfort to those who loved them both.

Those who knew Kim will remember not only what he accomplished, but how he made them feel: welcomed, supported, and often left with a smile. He leaves behind a legacy of boundless generosity and countless cherished memories. Whether sharing a hunting story, restoring a treasured firearm, helping a family member, or simply making someone laugh, Kim approached life with humor, kindness, and an unwavering willingness to help others. His memory will live on in the lives he touched and the many stories shared by those who loved him.
