John Duane Engelhardt, a Maryville resident since 1990, was born in Toledo, Ohio. An Army reservist at age 17, John volunteered for active duty on his 18th birthday in 1953, serving as an artillery specialist during the Korean War then as a drill instructor at Fort Knox, KY until his honorable discharge and marriage to Miss Marilyn E. Floro in 1956.
Together for 33 years, they raised four children named; David, Douglas, Sheryl and Russell all of whom grew to adulthood and began their exodus from their home.
Tragically, David was taken captive then shot and killed by the armed robber in Houston, TX on Christmas Eve of 1984.
Douglas married a Maryland girl named Dawn. Russell joined the Marine Corps and Sheryl went off to college and a marriage.
While all this was going on, John in 1962, began a 32 year career with the United States Postal Service during which he rose from a part-time clerk/carrier to a full time city delivery carrier to Superintendent of Mails to the Postmaster of Huron, Ohio to a Master Instructor position at the Postal Service Training and Development Institute in Bethesda, MD. Following this he became a Training Program/Coordinator charged with the design and development of Management Training Programs. His final promotion was to Manager of Operating Services at the highly acclaimed and prestigious William F. Bolger Management Academy in Potomac, Maryland.
In December of 1989, Johns wife died from lung cancer. Shortly thereafter his own health condition caused him to retire to the hills of Tennessee in 1990.
Health conditions notwithstanding, John remarried in 1996 and now is survived by wife Carole Ann. Also surviving are daughter Sheryl, Samantha and Stephanie, sons; Douglas and Russell and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren currently numbering more than twenty happy and delightful young people.
At his personal request, John's remains will be cremated and his cremains dispersed during a private family ceremony at a future date.
