A native of Ogletown, Pennsylvania, he worked most of his life in Lansing, Michigan as a main frame computer technician for IBM after serving in the U.S. Army as a radar repairman. Baumgardner won several service and innovation awards from IBM before he retired in 1992 after 34 years with the company. He was a talented woodworker who loved creating furniture and cabinetry, as well as puzzles, doll cradles and rocking horses. He traveled throughout the US and Canada, and cruised to many places around the world. He retired in Winter Haven, Florida where he lived for 23 years before relocating to Chattanooga in 2021.
He was a member of Hixson United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy (1963), wife, Mary Louise (2014), his parents, Lewis and Anna, his brother Lewis Jr., and sisters Vera, Annabelle, and Fern.
He is survived by his three children, Vicky (David) Flessner of Chattanooga; David (Diane) Baumgardner of Grand Ledge, Michigan, and Ron (Tammy) Baumgardner of Dewitt, Michigan, as well as his brother Elmer (Doris) Baumgardner of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and his sister Evelyn Varner. He was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather to 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, March 11 at Hixson United Methodist Church, 5301 Old Hixson Pike, Chattanooga. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Shriners Hospital for Children, or the American Cancer Society.
