Arthur Gustave Strassburger of San Rafael, CA and recently of Clinton TN, passed away on Wednesday May 24, 2023 at the age of 97. Art was born on May 17, 1926, the youngest of 5 children, and grew up on the family farm near Sheboygan Falls, WI.
He attended Sheboygan Falls High School, and Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison, earning a degree in Civil Engineering. He had a long career with US Bureau of Reclamation, PG&E (1954 to 1985) and later as a private consultant on national and international hydroelectric projects. Throughout his career, Art was active in both ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) and the US Committee for Large Dams (USCOLD), presenting many papers at international conferences.
Art was the consummate engineer, always designing and constructing; everything from large dams, many rock walls, a swimming pool at the family home, to wine cork art. His proudest professional accomplishment was receiving the Rickey Award in 1993 from ASCE for his design and management of the Helms Pumped Storage Project in the high Sierras.
He moved to Marin Co, CA, shortly after completing his education, where he lived nearly 70 years.
He was a founding member of Peace Lutheran Church in Mill Valley. There, he and his wife Mimi met many of their lifelong friends. They loved to travel, visiting over 32 countries during their life together.
Art will be remembered for his dumb jokes, hard work, and love of singing and dancing. In his later years, he performed in Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House as a member of the Chorale Singers of Marin and Dominican Chorale.
Art was proceeded in death by his wife of 67 years in 2021, Marilyn “Mimi” Strassburger. He is survived by son Eric (wife Petra); daughters Julie and Marie (husband Rick Kearney), and grandson Collin Strassburger, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held August 18 at 1 pm at Peace Lutheran Church, Mill Valley, CA followed by internment next to his wife Mimi in the shadow of Mt. Tamalpais at Fernwood Cemetery. Internment of ashes also occurred at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Howard’s Grove, WI.
