Ellen married Daniel Hon on September 1, 1956, and graduated in 1957 from the University of California Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, California. She devoted herself to education as a Physical Education teacher at Albert Monroe Junior High School in Inglewood, California, bringing steady purpose and care to the students she served.
With Daniel’s military service, Ellen traveled the world, including time in Tachikawa AFB, Japan—experiences that reflected a life shaped by commitment, adaptability, and an enduring openness to new places and people. In 1964, she adopted Deborah Hon in Seoul, Korea (1964-present), and also adopted David Hon in Los Angeles, California (1964-2025).
Throughout her life, Ellen found joy in simple, sustaining pleasures: badminton, bowling, gardening, and traveling. She also had a well-known fondness for sweets, especially ice cream. Just as meaningfully, she loved cooking homemade meals for family and friends, offering warmth and welcome through the care of her kitchen and table.
Ellen was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Passick (passed away 1987). She is survived by her daughter, Deborah (Hon) DeCosin of Kennewick, Washington; her son in law, Christopher DeCosin of Kennewick, Washington; her sister, Pamela Lancaster of Baker City, Oregon; her nephew, Daniel Heerdink of San Diego; her nephew, Michael Appleton of Hermiston, Oregon; her nephew, Phillip Appleton of Salem, Oregon; her niece, Kendra Appleton Houston of La Grande, Oregon; her nephew, Todd Cording, Harragate, England; and her grandson, Michael Climer, wife Natasha, and 3 great grandchildren, NC.
