Sondra Broxson Hyman, after fighting advanced liver cancer for seven months at home, moved to the Sanctuary at Passages Hospice Facility on Wednesday, July 28, 2017 at 7:00 PM. She decided to stop her courageous battle at 11:45 PM that same night; she was ready to leave us for a better position. Just hours before leaving her home for the last time, Sondra spent the day visiting and talking with many family members and friends. Sondra was born in Dequincy, LA, but at a young age her family moved to McComb, MS. She attended McComb High School and the University of Southern Mississippi. Sondra moved to New Orleans and, while raising her family, became an accomplished business woman. She worked for Shell Oil Company, managed the payroll department at Southern Baptist Hospital, and owned and operated Cook’s Accounting and Tax Return Service. Throughout her life, Sondra battled and overcame breast cancer, a liver transplant, thyroid cancer, a thyroidectomy, quadruple bypass surgery, and renal failure. Throughout her trials and battles, Sondra always maintained a good spirit, had a constant smile on her face, and displayed a high level of humor. Every day Sondra professed a profound love for her family and many friends. She is survived by her husband, Al Hyman, three sons, Alvin Jr., Brandon (Jillian), and Christoper Hyman. She is also survived by her brother, Gene (Corrine), her nephew, Preston, her niece, Sarah Grace (Robert), and her in-laws, Jack Hyman, Nick Hyman, Ron Hyman, Mel Hyman (Martha), Diane Hyman Saltalamacchia (Anthony), Earl Hyman (Linda), and Jeanie Hyman Knoess (Barney). She will be sadly missed by her family, many friends, and by McComb High School Graduating Class of 1965. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at St. Francis Xavier Church, 444 Metairie Rd., Metairie, LA 70005, on Saturday, July 29, 2017. Visitation with the family will begin at 10 AM and Mass will be held at 12 Noon. An online guest book is available at www.neptunesociety.com/location/new-orleans-cremation. Arrangements entrusted to Neptune Society of New Orleans, 3801 Williams Blvd., Kenner, LA 70065. 504-464-3095.
