Slidell — Rhea Kathryne Snyder, 88, of Slidell, LA, passed away on September 15, 2023. She was born on October 19, 1934, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, to Raymond and Estella Hum. She married David Snyder August 1954. She is survived by her three children, Davina Lock (Bryan), Scott (Abby), and Martin (Chandra). She adored her six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Ray.
Rhea dedicated 49 years of her life to nursing, working as an OR nurse, an ER nurse and completing her career as an instructor at Slidell Vo-Tech. Rhea was a charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, and participated in various church activities, including choir, homebound services, and serving on the Care Team. Rhea’s faith also led her to participate in medical and dental mission trips to Belize for 20 years, where she offered care to the indigenous people of the South Belize Jungle.
Rhea was an over-achiever. At the age of 50, she took up race-walking and became the number one race walker in her age group in the world. She accomplished her first marathon at the age of 70. She also served as a Track and Field official, specializing in pole vault and the high jump. Rhea had a deep appreciation for the fabric and needle arts, creating beautiful quilts and cross-stitch gifts for family and friends. Rhea’s adventurous spirit took her on many journeys around the world, including visits to the Holy Land, Italy, France, Germany, Japan, and Korea.
A memorial service to celebrate Rhea’s remarkable life will be held at 1:00 on Friday, September 22, 2023 at Slidell’s Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
