He passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2025, in Lacombe, Louisiana, surrounded by the love of his family. His 82 years on Earth were filled with laughter, love, and tireless devotion to his family, community, and craft.
A 1960 graduate of John McDonogh High School, Mel shared his life with his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 64 years, Linda Taix Seeger. Together, they built a life of love and adventure. Mel spent 22 distinguished years serving the city of New Orleans as a firefighter, where his bravery and dedication made him a true hero.
Mel’s skills extended far beyond the firehouse. A true “jack of all trades,” he was skilled in construction, mechanics, welding, and commercial fishing—fixing just about anything with an uncanny precision that made duct tape seem obsolete.
Despite his remarkable talents, Mel found the greatest joy in life’s simpler pleasures. He loved RV camping adventures with family, peaceful mornings spent deer hunting in the woods, and fishing trips that were as much about the company as the catch.
Mel leaves behind a family who will miss him dearly, including his devoted wife, Linda; children Catherine Ann Seeger, Sharon Seeger Broussard, and Melvin Louis Seeger, Jr. (Rachel); and his grandchildren Erin Patrick Flynn, Elise Marie Broussard, Shane Matthew Seeger, and Sarah Nicole Seeger. He is also survived by his loving sister, Merline Olivier Seeger.
Mel’s absence will be profoundly felt by his extended family, including Judy Walker, Bob Walker, Lucien Taix, Ray Taix Sr., Margaret Taix, Marie Kaklis, Jo Ann Boudreaux, and Johnny Lassiegne. Meanwhile, the late Gilbert Boudreaux Sr., Faye Lassiegne, Louie Perrodin, and Eileen Taix have undoubtedly greeted him with open arms in heaven and likely a list of things needing to be fixed. Countless other loved ones will hold his memory close and carry his spirit forward.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Charles Seeger, Sr. and Lillian Burk Seeger; his brother, Theodore Charles Seeger, Jr.; and his sister, Dorothy Seeger Jones.
A memorial mass to honor and celebrate Melvin’s life will take place on Saturday, February 8th at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Lacombe, Louisiana. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Family and friends are invited to gather afterward at Mel and Linda’s home to share memories, laughter, and good company in his honor.
Mel Seeger lived a life of purpose and immeasurable love. He leaves a legacy of hard work, kindness, and unforgettable moments that his family and friends will treasure forever.
