Mayer Jules Heiman, MD, age 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, surrounded by his family. Dr. Heiman attended Isidore Newman School, and graduated from Tulane University and Louisiana State University School of Medicine. He was in private practice for many years and was associated with Touro Infirmary, Tulane Medical Center and the L.S.U. School of Medicine. Along with his private practice, Dr. Heiman was passionate about providing healthcare to all, particularly to those who could not afford or had no access to quality healthcare. He donated every available moment to the International Hospital for Children, a local foundation he started in the early 1980’s. The I.H.C. provided medical care and equipment to those in need across the world, especially in the aftermath of natural disasters. For the past ten years Dr. Heiman vigorously advocated on behalf of caregivers to Alzheimer’s patients; for medical schools to start teaching the value of house-calls; and for doctors to recall there was a human being inside each patient on the table. Dr. Heiman supported critical thinking, literacy, and above all the study of history. A pre-modernist to the core, he was bitter to the end about the popularity of television and the rise of the digital age. He is survived by his wife, Judy McNutt; his children Gisele Cosma (Bill Ary), Stuart Heiman, Paul Heiman, Rachel Larkin (Chris), and Matthew Heiman Netherton; his extended family Larry and Erin McNutt, Daphne Barry, and grandchildren James and Rose Larkin, Tai and Ana McNutt, and Elena Barry. Dr. Heiman is also survived by his right hand and caregiver Mrs. Cynthia Breaux. He was preceded in death by his father, David J. Heiman DDS, and his mother, Sylvia Richman Heiman. The family will hold private services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local library. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Neptune Society of New Orleans.
