Malcolm Paul Schwarzenbach, III, informal ambassador of New Orleans, fittingly passed away on King’s Day, January 6, at the age of 58, after privately, courageously, and optimistically battling a series of health issues. Malcolm was born on September 19, 1965, in Colorado Springs, CO. His family moved several times with the US Army, finally settling in New Orleans in 1972.
Malcolm attended St. Andrew the Apostle School and Jesuit High School. He was a member of the National Honor Society, served as soccer team captain, and graduated Magna cum Laude in 1983. He subsequently attended LSU, where he was a member and later president of the fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI). After graduation, he lived and worked in Atlanta, GA, as well as Charlotte, NC, before ultimately settling back in New Orleans for good in 1998.
Malcolm was passionate about his work as Partner/CEO of Trumpet Advertising and about mentoring others. Over the years, he had active roles in his industry as well as civically, including the N.O. Chapter of the American Marketing Association, former president; the Spirit of Charity Foundation and the Project ‘83 Jesuit Thanksgiving Drive, board member; Jesuit’s President’s Advisory Council, chairman; Junior Achievement & Brees Dream Foundation for Young Entrepreneurs, partner; Swiss-American Society of N.O., member; New Orleans Regional Leadership Institute (NORLI), graduate and commencement speaker. Malcolm was truly a “man for others”.
His was a life well-lived, filled with a loving family, an abundance of friends, great neighbors, music, festivals, travel, volunteerism, and time spent in the great outdoors. Malcolm was a Saints & Pelicans season-ticket holder, and loved the Tigers, trivia, crossword puzzles, and welcoming others to his man cave “hospitality suite”. He enjoyed Mardi Gras, marched with the Dead Rock Stars, and served as their Honorary Grand Marshall in 2017.
Malcolm was preceded in death by his father, LTC Malcolm P. Schwarzenbach, Jr., US Army (Ret.); paternal grandparents, Malcolm P. Schwarzenbach, MD and Agnes McCord Schwarzenbach; and maternal grandparents, John Bruce Manes and Madeline Austin Manes.
Malcolm is survived by his beloved wife, Gina Knight, and their cherished children, Malcolm P. “Mac” Schwarzenbach IV and Sadie Evangeline Schwarzenbach; his mother, Sylvia Manes Schwarzenbach; his triplet siblings, Daniel Schwarzenbach (Amy), Donald Schwarzenbach (Alicia), and Dina Schwarzenbach; grandmother, Anna Baker Schwarzenbach, and many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.
Family and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at Chapel of the North American Martyrs, 310 S. Solomon St., New Orleans, LA 70119, on Friday, January 26. Visitation with family will begin at 5:00 PM with Funeral Mass at 6:00 PM. A Celebration of Life reception on Jesuit’s campus will follow.
