She was born on February 9, 1944, in Bern, Switzerland. At the age of 4, Lilly and her immediate family moved to Comayagua, Honduras, where she was raised with 8 other siblings on a dairy farm owned and operated by her parents.
At 19 years old, Lilly immigrated to New Jersey in the United States where she served as a nanny for a single family and learned English from the children in her care. A few years later, after taking a job as a waitress at a restaurant in New York City, she was introduced to the love of her life, Wally Calvin, by a mutual friend.
Lilly and Wally were married on January 31, 1970. Then, on January 13th, 1976, she gave birth to their son in Long Island, New York. The following year, on Halloween day, she gave birth to their daughter. It was in 1979 that Lilly and Wally made the pivotal decision to move their family down to Metairie, Louisiana.
Lilly was valued as a talented seamstress and home-cook among family, friends, and the wider community. One of Lilly’s many admirable accomplishments was the sewing of her daughter-in-law’s wedding gown, all the bridesmaids’ dresses, and the outfit she wore for her son’s marriage ceremony.
As busy as Lilly often was with preparing delicious foods and crafting countless items of clothing, she almost always found the time to watch the New Orleans Saints play football on television each week during the season. Her remarkable kindness and unwavering loyalty will be sorely missed.
Lilly is preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kaitlyn Hawkins. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Wally Calvin, her two adult children, John Calvin and Ruth Hawkins, and three grandchildren, Hailey Hawkins, Averi Macaluso, and River Calvin.
The Memorial Service will be held at the 1st Baptist Church of Kenner on June 11, 2026 at 11:00 am.
