

He was born on 8 December 1937 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he grew up. He graduated from Schenley High School where he was active in the band (trombone) and the Projectionists’ Club.
He spent twenty-nine and a half years serving in the United States Marine Corps (eighteen years enlisted and eleven and a half years as an officer). He retired as a Mustang Officer (MGySgt / CAPT). His last four years were spent living at the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH) located in Gulfport Mississippi, where he persevered with a strong sense of determination and lived life to the fullest on his own terms. He was a source of inspiration to many fellow residents.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Turley Brown and Priscilla Thorpe, his first wife, Betty Lou Drafts, second wife, Dr. Patricia Dayle Mason, and his daughter, Kimberly Sherrie Glaze.
He is survived by two brothers and sister, Phillip Hughes Sr., Jerry Harvey, and Janice Harvey, his son, Leon DeVon Hughes Jr. (Sandra), daughter, Andie DeAndrea Jackson, son-in-law, Michael Stephen Glaze, three step-kids, Rodney, Rhonda, and Gregory, four grandkids, Michelle Roy (Moe), Leon Hughes III (Lanecia), Jamahl Glaze (Vanessa), and CDR Krystal Glaze, and nine great-grandkids.
The family would like to thank Geraldine Mims for the care and compassion she showed our loved one in his final days.
To honor the wishes of Leon D. Hughes Sr., no funeral service will be held. The family asks that you remember him in your own special way.
