Joseph L Landry Jr.

LCdr USNRR Joseph L Landry, Jr., a Mandeville resident since 1986, was called to join his Heavenly Father on February 4, 2017 at 11:55 P.M. at the age of 76. He was born to the late Clara DeMary and the late Joseph L Landry, Sr. on December 23, 1940 in Woodlawn, LA. He is survived by his wife Rosalie Luke Landry, his sons Alan J. Landry (Erin) and Kevin D. Landry, his grandchildren Kathryn, Michael, Julian, and Jordan Landry, his step-children George W. Band, Sr. (Marilena), Gloria J. Band, Andrew L. Band (Lisa), William A. Band, Jr. (Elizabeth), and Jason J. Band, his step-grandchildren Elizabeth A. and Geoffrey (their mother, Melanie), George Jr., Clay, and Alexandra Band, Rachel and Stephen Sawyer, Amanda Meiners Kelly (Josh), and his one great-granddaughter Emma Rose Kelly. He is predeceased by his first wife Joanne Ray Landry, his sister Joyce Landry Soileau, and his parents Clara and Joseph L Landry, Sr. Joe was very active in the community and the church. He was a ‘reserve’ usher and Eucharistic Minister and vice-president of the Holy Mackerels senior club at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, a member of the Rev. Pugh Forth Degree Assembly of the Knights of Columbus in Slidell, LA and the Alex Semel Council 12989 Knights of Columbus at St. John of the Cross Church in Lacombe, LA. He was a member of the Mandeville Senior Citizens Club, volunteering where ever his help was needed, the Mandeville AARP Club, and Ochsner’s Golden Opportunity Covington group. Joe was, for over 20 years, a commissioner-in-charge for elections in St. Tammany Parish. He was a Boys Scout leader, both in Mandeville and in Reston, Virginia, and he was a soccer referee in Reston, VA. In Mandeville he was a coach and a referee for over 20 years, resulting in his being a recipient of a 2014 Making a Difference Award from Recreation District 1, Pelican Park, for his dedication to both youth and adult soccer. He later became involved with the National Women’s Soccer Program, sometimes travelling internationally on its behalf. He was an instructor for the AARP Smart Drivers course for 21 years, retiring only in October of 2016. When the Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars began accepting men, he immediately joined and became a life member of Davis Moran Post 8290, under grandson Geoffrey’s service. He was a Past Commander of American Legion Post 415, Mandeville, and has served as Post Adjutant for 27 years. He was a member and a past president of the Military Officers Association of America Ozone Chapter. Joe was a member of the Mandeville Lions Club, having served as a first vice-president and as president for 2 years. He was a past Lions District 8N Zone Chairman and Present Regional Zone Chairman. As a member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees group, he has served as president of Allie Picou Chapter 1482’s and presently as a State Federation district vice-president as well as a past state president. He also served, for several National Conventions, as vice-chairman of the credentials committee. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 501 Holy Trinity Dr., Covington, LA, on Friday, February 17, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Noon at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, 34888 Grantham College Dr., Slidell, LA. Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life following the interment, which will be held at the Mandeville Lions Hall, 720 Lafitte St., Mandeville, LA.
