James was preceded in death by his parents James Waddy Austin, Sr. and Annis Baldwin Austin, his two younger brothers, William Erwin Austin and John Thomas Austin, Sr.
Uncle of John T. Austin, Jr. (Lisa) of Arden, NC, Margaret E. Crowe (William) of Fountain Inn, SC, Patti Austin Martin of Greenville, SC, and Ann C. Johnson of Simpsonville, SC, and other relatives.
James is survived by his loving companion and wife of 43 years, the former Sheryl L. Buccola, with whom they had no children. James also precedes Sheryl’s younger siblings Jeanne B. Jackson (Joe) of Jemison, AL, and Victor L. Buccola (Robyn) of Destrehan, LA, and their three children, nephews Daniel L. Buccola (Janessa) and Cameron C. Buccola, and niece Veronica B. Savana (Ricky).
James and Sheryl enjoyed their retirement years occasionally traveling by automobile to other states to visit friends, including his kindred in the Carolinas. James treasured fine dining and was an enthusiastic and an avid fan of Clemson University Tiger football, much like the Tiger football fan his late brother John Thomas Sr. was.
James was schooled in lower Greenville County, SC and college educated at Clemson University where he earned his degree in Civil Engineering. He retired with 29 years of service on 1/3/03 from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Hydrologic Branch, in the New Orleans District, where years earlier he had first met his then future wife and now widow, Sheryl L. Buccola Austin.
Per James’ wishes and instructions, he had pre-arranged for his cremation and he wanted a private service. His ashes are interred in the Jeffersonian Mausoleum within the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Metairie, La.
