Helen Bemis Van Dyke Godfrey, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, surrounded by her loving daughters. Bemis, affectionately known as Bemie, was a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of the late William Duncan Van Dyke, Jr. and Helen Buttrick Van Dyke. She moved to New Orleans, Louisiana with her beloved husband, Paul Vernon Godfrey, in 1951. She grew to adore New Orleans and made many dear friends. Bemie possessed a gentle strength and treated everyone she met with respect and dignity. She will be remembered by her sweet disposition, her kind and wise counsel, her sparkling blue eyes, and her constant smile. Bemie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 50 years, and her brother, William Duncan Van Dyke, III. She is survived by her sister, Olive Van Dyke Bryson (husband, John Bryson) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, her daughters, Ann Godfrey Trice (husband, Britton Eaves Trice) and Kate Godfrey Robinson, her granddaughters, Eliza Trice Worley (husband, Michael William Worley) and Abigail Caroline Van Dyke Robinson, and her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Jane Worley and Britton Eaves Worley. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Evelyn Jackson, the great staff at Lambeth House, and to Guardian Angel Hospice for the kindness and compassion they showed Bemie. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service in the Chapel at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1329 Jackson Ave., New Orleans, LA 70130 on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 2:00 PM. Visitation with the family will begin at 1:00 PM. Reception to follow at Lambeth House, 150 Broadway St., New Orleans, LA 70118. Interment will be private at a later date.
