He suffered a debilitating stroke in 2014, that he endured with grace and a smile on his face every day. This was after he beat Multiple Myeloma, undergoing a stem cell transplant, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. He was a fighter and only with the extraordinary tender care his wife, Peggy, gave him for the last ten years did he survive this long. His family would also like to acknowledge and thank the many healthcare professionals who provided incredible and compassionate care for him, especially Compassus Hospice of Metairie, LA. The family also expresses their deepest gratitude to the staff of The Neptune Society, who provided exceptional and professional care of George.
Born March 15, 1948, in Coudersport, PA to Pauline Williamson Wurz and Rudolph George Wurz, who both preceded him in death. After the death of his father, the family moved to New Orleans where George enjoyed an idyllic childhood in Lakeview attending Edward Hynes Elementary and Beauregard Junior High School.
Beloved father of Natalie Wurz Moser of New Orleans and Matthew Gregory Wurz (Nina) of Seattle, WA. Grandfather of Ethan, Dylan and Katelyn Moser of New Orleans and Kurt and Jinora Wurz of Seattle, WA. Loving stepfather to Frank Catalano (Stephanie), Melissa Lacoste, and the late Stephen Lacoste (Kristy), step-grandfather to Kayla, Landon, Logan and Laney, and step-great grandfather to Silas.
George is survived by his devoted wife, Peggy Moreci Wurz, sister, Juliette Hare O’Connor (Patrick) of Metairie, LA, nephew William Robert Hare (Rosemarie) and niece, Jodi Laborde Little (Tommy) along with grand nieces Jessica, Brittanie, Kacie, Victoria, Shelby and Madison and a host of great-grand nieces and nephews.
George is also survived by the mothers of his children, Sharon Soniat and Rose Castay. He is also survived by two half nephews, Charles Wurz (Pat) of Pittsburg, PA, and Robert Wurz of FL and a half niece, Jacqlynn Giovanetti of N.J.
George was a 1966 graduate of Warren Easton High School in New Orleans, LA. He was editor-in-chief of the senior yearbook, a member of the Key Club, Quill & Scroll, and Pelican State. After obtaining his master’s degree in business from LSU in Baton Rouge he was employed by the University of New Orleans and became the Director of Financial Aid.
Besides his family, George loved dogs, horses, City Park in New Orleans and growing up in Lakeview. George and his sister spent childhood summers in Mississippi with their Aunt Grace and Uncle Ray Prosser’s home in Bay St. Louis and with their Aunt Hope and Uncle Buddy Perkins’ home in Pascagoula. Going to the beach, learning to swim, and enjoying time with his cousins, Lynne, Karen, Patricia and Rickey Prosser and Sandie and Jo Perkins. He also had a particular fondness for ketchup – he put it on everything.
George would give giant handmade cards to a lucky few with messages such as 92 Reasons Why I Love You for his mother’s 92nd birthday and 65 Reasons Why I Love You for his sister. He also constructed a Monopoly type board game using all 1950’s Lakeview landmarks as game pieces for his sister. He cherished and loved the many visits to see his adored Aunt Grace Prosser in her later years.
The 2005 Hurricane Katrina flooding of the Greater New Orleans area forced George and Peggy to evacuate along with his mother to the kindness of the residents of Arley, AL. They were able to live in a serene setting at Smith Lake. His family is forever grateful to the generosity and hospitality of the people of Arley and Jasper, AL.
George and Peggy were able to return to Metairie, LA a few years later, after the death of his mother. George will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him. A private scattering of ashes to celebrate his life will be held at a future date. The family knows he is now in the loving arms of his mother and father and all the others who went before him. Rest In Peace our husband, brother, father, grandfather, nephew and friend.
