He is survived by his loving wife, Linda VeZain, of 67 years, and his two sons, Scott VeZain (Susan) and Steve VeZain (Carole). He left 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Fred was born in Ottawa, IL on November 4, 1939, to Fred and Laura VeZain. He had 3 sisters, Lois, Sherry, and Eleda. He grew up in Ottawa until the family relocated in 1954 to Morrison, CO where he attended Bear Creek High and met Linda. After graduating high school, he joined the Navy and married Linda on December 23, 1957. He retired from the Navy after 22 years of service with various assignments on the USS Saratoga, USS Forestall, and flying Navy support transport planes around the world. He had various careers after the Navy, but his favorites were at Christwood Senior Living and volunteering at St Tammany Hospital serving the elderly.
Fred grew to love the lord and was active in church and witnessing to others thru various groups that included Promise Keepers, prison ministry, men’s groups and lunch ministry, along with becoming a Deacon at New Zion Baptist Church.
Fred had many activities including coaching various little league teams from football to baseball. He was a scout master with the Boy Scouts and liked the outdoors. He was also a car enthusiast where he restored various cars, 1962 Ford Ranchero, 1948 Chevy Pickup, and 1963 Chevy Corvair convertible. Fred didn’t stop there; he also built several motorcycles for friends in the Shriner Motorcycle Escort Unit at the Morroco Shrine in New Orleans. As part of the unit, he road 100’s of Mardi Gras parades and escorted for special events raising money to fund the Shriner’s Hospital. Fred never met a stranger and made friends easily. He was very loyal to his friends and was always there for them in good times and bad.
Fred will be missed by many, but we know we will see him again in Heaven. Rest in peace our Friend, Husband, Dad, Uncle, Brother-in-law, Grandpa, and Pops.
