Mrs. Elizabeth “Betty” Wood Gould Poole, 95, of Metairie, LA and Leland, MI passed away on April 24, 2016 in Destrehan, LA. Betty was born in Buffalo, NY to Charles F. Gould and Lucy Wood Gould on March 27, 1921. She spent her summers with her family in Leland, MI, where she learned to play golf at a very young age. In her early 20’s she joined the American Red Cross. She was stationed in Guam during World War II when she met her future husband, Robert Grady Poole, who was an Air Force pilot. In 1946, they married in San Francisco, CA and eventually settled in Metairie, LA in 1958. She worked for South Central Bell in New Orleans for 17 years, but enjoyed spending time surrounded by her family at her summer home in Leland, MI. Betty was a passionate, lifelong golfer who played until she was 92 years old. She spent summers marshaling junior golf at the Leland Country Club, teaching her grandchildren the sport. She was a member at both the Leland Country Club in Leland, MI, and the City Park Ladies Club in New Orleans, LA. Betty was a longtime member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Metairie, LA and St. Peter’s Episcopal Summer Church in Leland, MI. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Grady Poole, and her sister, Phoebe O’Shea. Betty is survived by her 3 children, Elizabeth Poole Dyer (husband, Glenn) of Kenner, LA, Robert Grady Poole, Jr. (wife, Bonnie) of Hot Springs Village, AR, and Barbara Poole Smith (husband, Bill) of Beaumont, TX. She had 10 grandchildren, Jesse Kellum, Lucy Dyer Erickson, Glenn David Dyer, Christopher Poole, Dillon Poole, Devon Poole Perez, Cody Poole, Lindsay Smith West, Sean Smith, and Scott Smith. She also had 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Lucy Butterbaugh of Buffalo, NY and Maryellen Hadjisky of Leland, MI. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 2216 Metairie Rd., Metairie, LA 70001 on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 4 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to the Friends of Leland Library Fund (http://www.lelandlibrary.org) or to the Leelanau Community Cultural Center (http://www.oldartbuilding.com), both of which were near and dear to her heart.
