Elaine Lucille Franke

Elaine Franke passed away peacefully on July 29, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family after a short hospital stay and returning home to hospice. She leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories, laughter, adventures, and unconditional love.

Born and raised in Marshalltown, Iowa, Elaine was the beloved daughter of Eldred and Virginia Franke and the sister of Russ and Janice. She graduated from the University of Iowa before setting out to discover the world and, in many ways, herself. She traveled extensively and embraced every opportunity life placed before her. Elaine often joked that she was the "black sheep" of the family, but those who knew her best understood that she was also its brightest light.

At 35, Elaine became a mother to her greatest joy, her daughter, Angela Franke. When Angela once teasingly asked if she had been a mistake, Elaine replied with characteristic wit, "No, I just had things to do before you got here." That answer perfectly captured Elaine's outlook on life—she lived boldly, on her own terms, and when she loved, she loved with her whole heart.

Elaine dedicated more than 30 years of service to the State of Arizona before retiring in 2018. Alongside her career, she proudly built a successful Avon business for nearly two decades, turning a side hustle into another way to connect with people and brighten their days.

She claimed to be a cat person—until Bert entered her life. Then came Ernie, their puppies Tinker and Bell, Batman, and puggle Zoe. Over the next two decades, her home was filled with wagging tails, tiny paws, and endless love. Her daughter often joked that there were times it seemed Elaine loved the dogs more than her—but anyone who knew Elaine knew her heart was simply big enough for everyone, furry or otherwise.

One of Elaine's greatest blessings came when she became Grandma to Alyx in 2014 and Alijah in 2015. She adored her grandchildren, and they adored their grandma. Whether sharing laughs, making memories, or simply spending time together, they brought immeasurable joy to one another.

Retirement only marked the beginning of another adventure. Elaine embraced every day with enthusiasm. She treasured her regular breakfast dates with her dear friend, Ute Wilfong, and quietly enjoyed a special friendship—and perhaps a romance she'd never quite admit to—with "Mr. Bouy," Bill, who happened to be Angela's former junior high computer teacher.

Elaine continued her adventures with her daughter and grandchildren, becoming part of the family's travel crew. After spending more than 30 years in Arizona, she lived in Pittsburgh, returned to Arizona, and eventually found her way to New Orleans, always embracing whatever came next.

Writing these words began with overwhelming sadness. But as old photographs were pulled from boxes and memories came rushing back, something changed. Elaine became whole again—not defined by illness or loss, but remembered as the fun-loving, adventurous, generous, and unforgettable woman she had always been.

To Angela, Elaine was not only a mother but a best friend. To countless others, she was a loyal friend, a trusted coworker, a caring neighbor, a devoted grandmother, and someone whose kindness could brighten even an ordinary day.

Elaine Franke was truly one of a kind. Her laughter, generosity, adventurous spirit, and enormous heart will continue to live on in everyone fortunate enough to know her.

She is survived by her daughter, Angela Franke; her grandchildren, Alyx and Alijah Baker; countless friends; and the many lives she touched throughout her journey.

Mom, thank you for every adventure, every laugh, every lesson, and every unconditional hug. I am endlessly grateful that I got to call you my mom, my best friend, and my home. We will miss you every day, but your love and your light will remain with us always.
