Don was born in New Orleans on May 10, 1946. He was the devoted husband of Janis DeBlasio Manalla for 59 years and loving father of Tara Manalla Luparello (Don) and Donald Manalla Jr. (Christine). But his favorite people called him “Papa,” his grandchildren Mia Luparello, Juliana Manalla, Mireille Luparello, and Carter Manalla. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Nat J. Manalla Jr., and his brothers Albert Manalla and Nat Manalla III.
Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving his country in Vietnam. He was incredibly proud of his military service and remained close to the surviving members of the crew of the USS Bulloch County (LST-509), reuniting each year. His career of service continued after his honorable discharge from the Navy, as Don joined the New Orleans Fire Department.
Long before big-box stores were a thing, Don opened Suburban Athlete sporting-goods store in Chalmette. This family-owned small business equipped many of the area’s schools, sports teams, and athletes for more than 20 years. During that time, Don coached the 9/10-year-old St. Bernard All-Stars baseball team. He was also an avid golfer, and in recent years he was a marshal at Covington Country Club.
Don always enjoyed a really good burger and a smooth tequila. He built toys for his grandkids in his woodworking shop, spent time perfecting his barbecue and smoker recipes, and loyally followed the Atlanta Braves baseball team.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a celebration of Don’s life at Benedict’s, 1144 N. Causeway Blvd., Mandeville, on Monday, December 16, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. interment will be private.
