Don was born July 16, 1939 and raised in uptown New Orleans. Don married Mary in 1962 and moved to St. Mary Magdalen Parish. Here they raised their three children: Donald Johnson Jr. (Michelle), Donna Silva (Carl), and Denise Quiros (Jay). Don is survived by his bride (Mary), his sister (Celestine Bock), and his children, along with his grandchildren: Brooke, Kaylyn (Jacob), Colin (Taylor), Madison, Shelby, Catherine (William), Mackenzie, Kyle (Anna), Seth, Emily, Caroline, and Kade; and great-grandchildren: Avery and Arch. He is also survived and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Don was a proud soldier in the United States Army and honorably discharged as an E-4 in 1969. He was a machinist by trade and had many lifelong hobbies such as racing hydroplane boats and dirt bikes. He also spent many years rebuilding classic chevy engines and gained recognition as a car enthusiast. Don was known for Cruisin’ The Coast in his ‘55 Chevy and celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in the Irish Channel.
While there are many words that can be used to describe Don, his legacy lies in the time he devoted to others. Don took the time to truly connect and show up for those in his life. He had a profound ability to make a person feel seen, valued, and appreciated from the moment he said hello. Whether you call him Bay, Dad, Grandfather, Papa Don, Uncle Bro, Straights, or Mr. Don, his kindness left a lasting impression. He always took the time to call for a birthday, an anniversary, or a milestone event for his family and friends. Don had a special talent for gathering everyone together and making sure there were lots of selfies to capture the moment.
While Don will be remembered for many things, he will be most remembered for his deep love for his Bride. The love story of Don and Mary was beautiful and deeply inspiring. Nearly 63 years of marriage is a remarkable testament to the strength and depth of their bond. Their relationship was a shining example of what commitment, loyalty, and true love looks like. The love they shared was a gift to everyone who was fortunate enough to witness it.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation Friday, January 24 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., followed by a Mass at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church (6425 West Metairie Avenue). Don will be laid to rest at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Mary Magdalen Capital Campaign in Don’s name. Friends and family are encouraged to add an accent of Mardi Gras or St. Patrick’s Day colors to your attire in honor of his love for both.
