Born in New Orleans in 1958, Donald dedicated much of his life to serving others. In 1975 at just 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served with honor aboard the USS Skate (SSN-578) nuclear submarine. After transitioning from active duty to reserve service, he continued his commitment to public service as a police officer with the New Orleans Police Department.
Donald’s dedication to others extended far beyond his official roles. He was an adoring father and a steadfast friend whose presence brought joy and strength to those around him. He had a thirst for knowledge and was always eager to offer wisdom, comfort, or humor — and had a knack for knowing exactly which was needed. Donald was a dependable source of care and support to all who had the privilege of loving him. The void he leaves behind is only a small reflection of the love he gave.
Donald is survived by his daughter, Angela, and her husband, Garrett; his loving partner, Pamela; and his siblings, David (Carolyn), Ferdinand Jr., Cheryl (William), and Paul (Dianna). He was a proud uncle to Michael (Taisha), Robert (Eleonora), Rebecca (William), and Christine (Perry), their children, and his late nephews & niece David Jr., Paul Jr., and Victoria. He is also survived by his Aunt Leenie and many other cherished relatives and friends. Donald is preceded in death by his parents, Vivian and Ferdinand Carey.
A burial service will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Lake Lawn Park Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, LA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Donald’s memory to Disabled American Veterans (DAV), an organization close to his heart.
