Born on July 16, 1964, Cynthia’s quick wit and lively spirit emerged early—she was voted “Most Witty” in high school. Humor, warmth, and a natural ease with others became her signature, drawing people to her in every chapter of her life.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Tennessee and later completed a Master of Business Administration at Bristol University. Her professional life was spent in talent acquisition, where she built a career defined by her instinct for people and by helping individuals find their place in the world.
In her early 40s, Cynthia became a fitness and wellness enthusiast. She ran marathons and half marathons and competed in triathlons. She joined running, cycling, masters swimming, and triathlon clubs with enthusiasm, forming friendships along the way. Cynthia found joy in hiking trails, kayaking on open water, and embracing the outdoors wherever she could.
Thrifting was one of Cynthia’s superpowers and a source of delight. She enjoyed combing through thrift stores and creating stunning fashion ensembles for herself and others.
Cynthia had a deep spiritual life that included active volunteer service across several denominations. During her years in Nashville, she was a strong leader in her Presbyterian church's efforts to serve the homeless.
She courageously and quietly battled two types of cancer over five years, staying stylish without complaint. Throughout her journey, she continued to exercise, focused on wellness, and remained positive, fearless, and resilient. She embraced the next step in her spiritual journey.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lt. Col. Richard “Arch” Joseph Kern; her mother, Georgie Arlene Fabert Kern; and her brother, Timothy Richard Kern.
She is survived by her brothers, Daniel Jay Kern (Rebecca) of Knoxville, TN, and Steve Jewett Kern (Mallory) of Denver, Colorado; her stepmother, Sharon Jewett Kern of Knoxville, TN; her best friends, Lynn Bennett and Susie Maitland of Nashville; and a host of loving Cincinnati cousins.
Cynthia’s life will be honored at an intimate gathering of close friends and family on Sunday, May 17. Those who knew her well and wish to attend are asked to contact her partner, Frances Lucas.
In honor of Cynthia’s memory, donations may be made to Girls on the Run– New Orleans (https://www.gotrnola.org/), an international organization that inspires participants to recognize their inner strength, increase physical activity, and stand up confidently for themselves and others.
To remember Cynthia Sue Kern is to recall dazzling, infectious smiles, laughter, determination, and a life lived fully.
