With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Amy Hayner Kates – devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend – from heart failure on July 9, 2017. All will remember her loving spirit, generous heart, and commitment to the causes dear to her. Originally from Springfield, Illinois, she made New Orleans her home after attending Tulane University. She taught Sunday school and was an active volunteer for Lakeview Presbyterian Church, assuring that those in need received warm food and heartfelt comfort. She was a two-term national president of her fraternity, Kappa Alpha Theta, where she revitalized its organizational structure and expanded its college chapters. In her role at Theta, she championed a fund for those experiencing extreme financial hardship and influenced numerous young women to follow in her footsteps as strong leaders. Recently, she worked as a notary and signing agent for individuals and businesses throughout the area. Most of all, she was dedicated to her family, daughter Maggie, who will be a freshman at Northwestern University this fall, son Sam, who will be a sophomore at the Lusher School, and husband, Andy. She filled her home with friends and laughter. Amy’s parents also survive her, Aggie Hayner of Springfield, Illinois, and Dr. Robert Hayner, of Hilton Head, South Carolina. Throughout the years, Amy touched countless people. She will be greatly missed. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Lakeview Presbyterian Church, 5914 Canal Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70124, at 10 a.m. Friends are welcomed to attend a reception immediately following the service at the church’s fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations (non tax-deductible) may be made in her honor to the Kates Children Education Fund at the Lakeview Presbyterian Church. An online guest book is available at www.neptunesociety.com/location/new-orleans-cremation. Arrangements entrusted to Neptune Society of New Orleans, 3801 Williams Blvd., Kenner, LA 70065. 504-464-3095.
