Robert Hartgrave was born September 2, 1939, to Ruby (Anderson) McAninch and Wilbur Hartgrave in Des Moines, Iowa. He passed away peacefully on August 22, 2023, at the age of 83. Bob graduated from East High School in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1957, while in high school he found his love of running track. He achieved second in state for the mile run. In 1959, Bob joined the Army and set the mile record of 4 minutes and 17.3 seconds in a track meet in Germany. He was stationed in Germany for most of his career. Bob was also on the table tennis team while in the service and won many trophies. Bob loved all kinds of sports, but his ultimate love was running. He ran from Des Moines to Omaha, Nebraska, with a couple of friends at the age of 18 in three days. Bob’s advice was pace yourself. Don’t run too fast or you’ll burn out too early.
Bob worked for John Deere for 42 years and retired in 2001. Following retirement, he relocated to Louisburg, Kansas, where he continued to exercise daily by riding his stationary bike plus enjoyed tending to his yard. He had many interests and loves, but he didn’t love anything more than his 3 children; Jolene, Scott, and Jennie. Bob was a wonderful father. He was understanding, supportive, encouraging, and always there when you needed him.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Jolene McManigal ; his son, Scott; his daughter, Jennie Woolman; grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
It is with love that the Hartgrave family has decided to have a small private service. We thank all our family and friends for your continued support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Alzheimer’s Foundation on behalf of Bob for those affected by dementia/ Alzheimer’s.
