Matt is survived by his loving wife Jamie, mother Georgia Finks (Martin) stepfather Franklyn Finks, stepmother Beverly Messer, Uncle David Martin, Aunt Elizabeth Martin, Aunt Sallye Herbert (Messer), numerous cousins and friends, and his faithful and loving companion, Mimi.
Matt was preceded in death by his father Michael G Messer, grandparents George and Catherine Messer, and Ray and Betty Martin, Uncle Bill Martin, and Aunt Susan Weaver (Martin).
Matt’s presence brought light and laughter into every room. He loved sports and the great outdoors. He played hockey, soccer, tennis, swimming and bicycling especially with his grandfather Ray Martin. He enjoyed climbing cliffs, exploring caves, camping and canoeing especially with his wife Jamie, best friends Jay and Kathy Fuller and cousin Joe Weaver. He was a storm chaser and a ham radio operator.
He had an easy charm that made people feel valued and seen. His generosity extended far beyond words, his time, encouragement and a listening ear to anyone who needed it.
A celebration of Matt’s life will be held at HJ’s Youth and Community Center, 6425 Wornall Road in Kansas City, on September 27, 2026, starting at 3 pm with a memorial service at 3:30. Light refreshments will be available.
