

Larry Walter Bessert, born on December 22, 1936, in Freeport, Illinois died peacefully at home on August 8, 2026. He lived a life rich in love and achievement. He was the beloved son of Walter and Pearl Bessert. He graduated from Freeport High School in 1954 before serving with honor in the U.S. Air Force, where he was stationed in Europe. His commendable service earned him the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
In 1959, Larry married Marilyn Miller, the love of his life for 66 years. Together, they raised two daughters, Tammy and Tanya, and built a life filled with love, laughter and lots of great memories. It was marked by ten moves across the Midwest due to Larry's accomplished career in the insurance industry. Beginning in the mailroom at Freeport Insurance, which later became Home Insurance Company, he rose to become the Vice President, earning respect and lifelong friendships along the way.
A devoted family man, Larry's legacy is lovingly carried on by his wife Mary, his daughters Tammy (David) Marcum and Tanya Wortman, six grandchildren, including Paul (Tiffany) Richards, Ryan (Seth) O'Steen, Amanda (Matt) Green and Samantha (Nick) Wilson and ten great-grandchildren Kinsley and Paisley O'Steen, Scarlett, Everly, Ariana, Adalyn and Lincoln Richards, Mikayla Richards, Millie and Cecil Green.
His zest for life was evident in his many hobbies that he shared with family and friends: Bowling (including a 299 game), golfing (including a hole in one), gardening, hunting, fishing, camping, boating, water skiing, playing card game including Euchre, Poker, Bridge and Seven Up or Down (you better not let Larry catch you cheating….) He loved hiding Easter eggs for his kids, grandkids and great grandkids, always taking into consideration their hunting skills i.e. Mandy Land.
Larry's warmth, humor, and indomitable spirit have left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His life is a testament to love, resilience, and the joy of family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law Norma (Bessert) and Eugene Shade, son-in-law Eddie Wortman, niece Michele Firebaugh, granddaughter Vanessa Richards.
Larry is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law Audrey (Bessert) and Doug Firebaugh and a multitude of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

The celebration of Larry’s life will be held Saturday, September 5th at Holy Cross Lutheran Church located at 7851 W 119th St., Overland Park, KS 66213. A visitation will be held at 1:30 and the service will begin at 2:00pm.
