Kirby Stephen Johnson, a proud California native, passed away peacefully at home April 1st, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and adventure. Born in Glendale, CA to parents June and Kenneth Johnson, Kirby was a National Merit Scholar whose intelligence and dedication led him to a distinguished career in the United States Air Force. As a navigator and Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO) in B-52s and RC-135s, he served his country with honor, including during the Vietnam War. His military service took him across the world, and he developed a deep love for travel. Some of his favorite assignments and adventures brought him to Okinawa, Hong Kong, Greece and England, where he embraced different cultures and experiences with enthusiasm.
Beyond his service, Kirby embraced life with passion. A true foodie and a talented chef, he delighted family and friends with exquisite multi-course meals. His love for Borzoi Russian wolfhound dogs led him to the world of dog showing, where he took great pride in presenting these elegant companions.
A dedicated Freemason, he devoted countless hours to driving children to Shriners Hospital in St. Louis and volunteering for many years as an Associate Guardian of Job’s Daughters, making a lasting impact on young lives. His Masonic journey was a reflection of his deep belief in God and a Supreme Creator, guiding his life with principles of faith, morality, and brotherhood.
Kirby loved his family, and at the heart of it all was his beloved wife, Carlyn, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage. Their life together was filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Together Kirby and Carlyn spent many enjoyable hours at the bridge table, attaining the rank of Life Master and competing with some of the best players.
He deeply loved his daughter, Laura, his “number one son” -in-law, Huy, and his cherished granddaughters, Bailey and Grace. He was immensely proud of their success, often found in his favorite t-shirts advertising their schools.
Kirby’s adventurous spirit, commitment to service, and boundless love for his family will live on in the memories of those he touched.
