Jerry attended school in Lone Jack, Missouri. He was a cub scout, he started working in the fields at age 8, was actively involved in sports, band, and many leadership roles. His senior year, he worked part time and before his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard (USCG) which meant his service was “state side.”
He attended basic training in Alameda, CA; first duty station: USCG Air Base in Elizabeth City, NC; first school: Millington, TN where he learned to maintain C-130 aircraft: second duty station USCG Air Station: ECNC. He spent many hours sitting on the C-130 ramp searching for missing boats. From the “crash truck,” he watched planes practice landing and taking off.
July 30, 1974 – As he parked the “crash truck”, a Twin-engine Navy TE2A plane veered off the runway and crashed into the ARSC Maintenance (Upholstery) Shop. The base was “on lockdown” until the crash site was under control. Many base workers and 2 Navy pilots died that day.
While stationed at USCG Air Station, he met the “love of his life,” Frances Long Stogsdill. They resided there until his discharge. His brother-in-law, Bruce Long, lives in ECN.
He worked for the Jackson County Sherriff’s Department, Cook Paint Company, United Telephone Company, and Sprint. He accumulated may accolades while working for the telephone companies.
Preceding him in death; his father and mother, brothers – Larry Clinton and Terry Wayne (Marie), a stillborn brother, his nephews – Kevin Thomas and Darrel Ray, his nieces – Kimberly “Becca,” and Sheri Lynn Hutson.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Frances Stogsdill; brother, Gary Thomas (Connie); his nephew Chris Stogsdill; niece Cheryl Simpson-Stogsdill, great nieces and nephews; Corey, Kayla, Ashlee, Kelsey, Dalton, Joshua, Brennon, Avrie, and Logan; great grand nieces and nephews, Hadley, Channler, Laine, and Layton.
His pleasures were working outdoors, Church Trustee (3), Sound Board Operator, Disaster Relief, dramatic presentations, Basset Hound Rescue, Motorcycles, Volkswagens Trikes, Faith Riders, American Legion Post 0090, etc.
No services scheduled at this time. Plans will be announced later, and his burial will be in ECNC at a later date.
