The son of Samuel Turner Foutts and Elsetta Sophronia DeLong, he was born on February 10, 1930 in Blue Mound, Kansas.
Like many others at that time, he moved to Kansas City to begin his adult life. While working as a cook at the popular Nu-Way Drive In at 3205 Main (where he claimed that he was able to make ten Nu-Way hamburgers per minute) he met a carhop named Dolores Ann Zimmerling. They married on October 5th, 1953, made a home together and raised three children--Sally, Buddy and Kirk.
On November 29th, 1949, Harvey began his career with the Kansas City Missouri Fire Department. Shortly afterwards, he was drafted by the U.S. Army to serve in the Korean War. Upon completion of his tour of duty, he returned home. He remained active in the U.S. Army Reserve for five years. Also on his return, he resumed his career with the KCFD. There Harvey was soon promoted to the rank of Captain and served in that capacity until his retirement on December 30, 1978.
Harvey enjoyed engaging people with humor and his knowledge of the world around him. He very much enjoyed living life on his terms and in his own way. Though he was proud to say that “he never graduated from high school”, he went on to complete his high school degree.
Included in his many pursuits and a source of pride was his involvement with a race team. Harvey built race car engines and twice received the “C.A.R.B Top Sportsman Mechanic of the Year Award”. He had many fond memories of that time and valued the friendships made there. Harvey also enjoyed nature and taking the family on camping trips to experience the outdoors. He also enjoyed music, made a guitar by hand and created a collection of vinyl records.
Harvey is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dolores; daughter Sally (Mark); sons Buddy (Charlene) and Kirk (Connie); three grandsons Justin (Cathy) and Michael Foutts, and Craig Trued; four granddaughters Jill (Emrah) Metin, Laura Trued, Jenna (Kyle) McKee, Joanna Foutts, and Addison Feeney; a great-grandson, Nicholas Foutts, and two great-granddaughters, Blake McKee, and Zeynep Metin. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Otto Roberts, sisters Morilla Roberts, Nancy Moore, and Grace Alexander and granddaughter Amy Trued.
A celebration service is scheduled for July 26th, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS, 150 Muncie Road, Leavenworth, KS.
A reception will follow at Graceway Church, 5460 Blue Ridge Cut-Off, Kansas City, MO.
