Donald Charles Luallen, beloved father, grandfather, partner, and businessman passed away on Monday, February 24, 2025, at the age of 86. Born and raised in Dodge City, Kansas, Don was the son of Charles and Helen Luallen. He was an identical twin, sharing a deep bond with his brother, Dean, who was his lifelong friend and confidant.
Don graduated in 1961 from Wichita State University, where he earned a degree in Business Administration and was an active member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. After college, Don married Sally Shank Luallen, and they raised three daughters together.
Don liked to say that he had worked every day since he was in the 4th grade. He built his career in the insurance industry working first at Al Shank Insurance in Liberal, Kansas, before returning home to Dodge City to start Don Luallen Insurance and later Insurance Professionals in Wichita. Don was an innovative business owner who took great pride in his business and worked tirelessly to build relationships and serve the community, including leadership roles in Dodge City Community Concerts Association, Dodge City Public Library Board, Dodge City Rotary Club, and First United Methodist Church of Dodge City. He also played an instrumental role in the renovation of the Carnegie Center for the Arts in Dodge City.
After retirement, Don moved to Florida and enjoyed traveling, walking his dogs, gardening, and spending time with friends. In 2014, he moved to Kansas City to be closer to his family. He loved nothing more than hosting his family and friends for pool parties and cookouts where he could share his backyard.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Helen Luallen, and his daughter Amy. He is survived by daughters Stacy (Matt) Maloney and Molly (Roger) Smith; partner Curt Heath; brother Dean Luallen; grandchildren Katie (Daniel) Fitz, Madeline Maloney, Alexander Mentis, Harrison Smith, Blake Smith, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved dearly.
Don’s celebration of life will take place on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Asbury United Methodist Church, 5400 W. 75th Street, Prairie Village, Kansas, 66208.
