Cooper Welton Hedenskog, aged 85, passed away peacefully in Kansas City, KS. A man celebrated for his insatiable curiosity, gentle humor, and unwavering kindness, Cooper was the beloved eldest son of Glenn and Inez Hedenskog of Independence, MO. As a caring big brother to Larry Hedenskog, he grew up with a love for learning and an innate ability to share his vast knowledge with others.
Cooper's early years were spent working in his father’s tool and die shop, where his fascination with how things worked truly blossomed. After serving his country honorably as a Medical Specialist in the Army from 1962 to 1965, Cooper pursued his education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. His career in Information Technology spanned decades, including impactful roles at BMA, TWA, and MTW, as well as consulting work where he generously shared his expertise.
Beyond his professional achievements, Cooper found fulfillment in his service to others. His dedication to the Boy Scouts of America was evident in his hands-on involvement with Troop 354, mentoring while serving on the Eagle Scout Board of Review, and participating in countless troop meetings and camping trips. A proud member of organizations like the Alpha Masonic Lodge of North Kansas City, the Scottish Rite of Kansas City, and the Ararat Shriners, Cooper exemplified a life committed to camaraderie, service, and kindness.
Cooper's life was intertwined with music and faith. As a young accordion player, he shared his love of music by teaching students during his high school years. Later, music became a family tradition, with countless moments of singing together in the car and at home. His church family was an essential part of his journey as well. At the First United Methodist Church of North Kansas City (later North Cross UMC), he found purpose in roles such as choir member, audiovisual team volunteer, Stephen Minister, and participant in Cursillo training.
Cooper leaves behind his beloved wife and soulmate, Phylis Hedenskog; his children, Sean Hedenskog (Tamara) and Shelly Collins (James); his adored grandchildren: Halle, Emma, and Erik Hedenskog, Janika Hodge (TJ), Elijah Merritt, Lina, and Jakiera Collins; and seven great-grandchildren. He also leaves his nieces Lisa Martoncik (John) and Kristen Larson (Trace), four great-nieces, a great-nephew, a great-great-nephew, an extended family, and cherished friends who were blessed by his kindhearted and jolly spirit.
The final committal service will be at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, April 11th at Leavenworth National Cemetery (150 Muncie Road, Leavenworth, KS 66048). A celebration of life service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at North Cross United Methodist Church (1321 NE Vivion Rd, Kansas City, MO 64118), with fellowship and a reception afterward. The family asks attendees to wear plaid, Cooper’s favorite color. Donations can be made to Elevate Hospice Kansas or North Cross United Methodist Church.
