Alan Robert Hull, a pioneering physician and devoted family man, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 in Prairie Village, Kansas. Born on March 31, 1933, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to Vera and Robert A. Hull, Alan lived a life defined by medical innovation, faith, and a deep love for his family.
Alan grew up in Winnipeg, where he attended Kelvin High School. He continued his education at the University of Manitoba, earning a Master of Science in Biochemistry before entering medical school. It was during this time that he met a nurse, Shirley Campbell on a blind date. They were married in 1961, beginning a partnership that spanned 64 years.
Alan’s medical career took him across North America. He completed his residency at Denver General in Colorado before moving to Dallas in 1966 for a fellowship in Nephrology at UT Southwestern Medical School, where he later served as a clinical professor. A visionary in his field, Alan was an early practitioner on the cutting edge of dialysis. In 1971, he helped found Dallas Nephrology Associates, which grew into one of the nation’s leading firms for kidney care.
His contributions to medicine were vast; he served as the President of the National Kidney Foundation and was a dedicated mentor to countless young doctors who credit him for their professional growth.
Beyond his professional life, Alan was a man of steadfast faith. He was a founder and longtime elder of Trinity Fellowship Church in Richardson, Texas, where he took great joy in mentoring young men.
Alan and Shirley spent the majority of their lives in Dallas and Fort Worth before eventually moving to Kansas City. They cherished their time with family, particularly during summers spent at their lake home on Lake of the Woods in Canada. An avid outdoorsman, Alan loved to hunt, fish, golf, and travel the world.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Ken. He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley; his children, Scott, Brent and wife Krissy and Virginia and her husband Scott Freeland; his grandchildren, Tucker, Annabelle, Sara Lynn Freeland, Jackson and wife Natalie, Gigi, Harriette, Jameson, and Elena Hull; and his great-grandchildren, Campbell Claire and Westley Hull.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, February 7th, 2026 at 2:00pm Trinity Fellowship Church at 932 S. Greenville Ave., Richardson, Texas 75081.
