Martha was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 16, but she never allowed it to define her life. After graduating from Atholton High School in 1969, she moved to Salisbury, Maryland, to continue her education and remained there until 1988. She then relocated to Baltimore with her young daughter, where she built a successful career in banking before transitioning to the insurance industry, serving as a manager with Zurich Insurance.
In 2000, Martha and her longtime companion, Jim, moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where she continued her management career with Zurich Insurance Services. While living in Jacksonville, Martha and Jim were married on September 26, 2012. After retiring, they enjoyed traveling together, visiting Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Portugal, and, in 2023, Greece. Even while undergoing peritoneal dialysis and recovering from a broken foot, Martha completed that final trip. A testament to the determination and resilience she demonstrated throughout her life.
During high school, Martha was active in numerous organizations and clubs. Her commitment to service continued throughout her life as she volunteered with the Salisbury Jayceettes, the Maryland Jaycees, and HOBY. She was also actively involved with Habitat for Humanity and FIRST Robotics. In her spare time, Martha enjoyed collecting antiques and Barbie dolls.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Geneva Vollmerhausen. She is survived by her husband, James Hofmann; her daughter, Amy Rusek; her siblings, Katy Gnau, Carol Nase, and Karl Vollmerhausen; her stepsons, James and Ben Hofmann; and six grandchildren.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville and the Mayo Dialysis Center for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Martha over the past several years and during her final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at Eagle’s Nest Country Club, 12801 Stone Hill Road, Phoenix, Maryland 21131, on Saturday, July 25, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Martha’s honor to the American Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.org.
