Marie Daley, born Marie Brown on July 22, 1922, in Brooklyn, NY, passed away on April 23, 2023, at the age of 100 in Jacksonville, FL. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Marie was a gregarious and generous person who always had a smile for everyone, especially her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her warm and loving nature made her a cherished presence in their lives.
She is survived by her daughters Maureen Salemi (Edward), Kathleen Crowe (Patrick), and Colleen Fields (Bruce); her grandchildren Kathleen, Anthony, and Michael Salemi; Kirsten Anderson (George) and Meghan Neenan (Dreyfus); and her great-grandchildren Matthew Salemi, Ava Salemi, Emma Salemi, Kasey Neenan, Ryder Neenan, Skylar Mielke and Athena Anderson.
Marie was predeceased by her husband John F. Daley, USN, ret., whom she married on July 12, 1947, and the union lasted 41 years until Jack’s death in 1988. She was also preceded in death by her daughter Christine E. Daley, PhD., who passed in 2016.
Marie graduated from Bishop McDonell High School in Brooklyn, NY, in 1939. She furthered her education at the Heffley School of Business, graduating in September 1940. Her career began in the 1940's as an administrative assistant for Benedict and Benedict, American Safety Razor and Joseph J. Reilly in the Graybar Building in Midtown Manhattan. Marie’s dedication and hard work made her an invaluable asset in her role. Outside of her professional life, Marie had a passion for volunteering and community involvement. She was the Head Room Mom at Jesus Savior School in Newport for many years, where she also worked as the head of their annual fashion show fundraiser. She devoted her time to assisting with the church’s annual bazaar and procuring books for the new school library. Additionally, she volunteered at St. Catherine’s Academy in Newport, where her three oldest daughters attended. Marie was also actively involved in the campaign of Dan McCarthy, who ran for Newport City Council during the 1960's. Her love for travel took her to Ireland in 1998, Germany in 2000, and she enjoyed visiting Hawaii on five occasions, often accompanied by one or more of her daughters.
A Funeral Mass was held at St. Lucy’s Catholic Church in Middletown, RI, on July 22, 2023. Marie was laid to rest at Newport Memorial Park on July 26, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Fr. Flanagan’s Boys Town in Marie’s memory.
Marie Daley will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to family and community will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.
