Maria de Los Angeles Balmaseda 93, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on April 11, 2025. Prior to her passing, she was surrounded by her loved ones, a testament to the deep bonds of family that she cherished throughout her life. Born in Sagua La Grande, Cuba, Maria emigrated to the United States in 1952, first settling in Miami, where she began building a life full of adventure and love.
She had a fulfilling career with Pan American Airlines, dedicating 25 years to the company as a Passenger Service Agent in the Clipper Club with opportunities to travel and explore the world—a passion that defined her spirit. At home, Maria was the heart and soul of her family, a beloved matriarch whose warmth, wisdom, and incredible cooking brought everyone together. She had a deep love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, creating a legacy of love that will endure. Maria was also a baseball fan, enjoying a good game and following the careers of MLB players. She found joy in opera, appreciating its beauty and artistry.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Gloria Cardenas; her father, Mario Jesus Orta; and her grandson, Michael. She is survived by her husband, Julio; her brother, Mario L. Orta, and his wife, Zonia; her loving children, Gloria White (David), Charlie (Nell), Victor (Debbie), and Renata Cavalier (Jack). She was also cherished by her grandchildren, Matthew, Michelle, Alan Jay, Rocco, and Dante, and her great-grandchildren, Axel and Hunter.
She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who were blessed to know her. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Anne & Donald McGraw Center for Caring of Community Hospice, Jacksonville, Florida.
