John Howard West, 89, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida. Born on June 22, 1935 in Rochester, New York, John lived a remarkable life defined by dedication to his family, career, and passions.
A proud 1958 graduate of the Cornell School of Hotel Administration, John embarked on a distinguished career in the hotel and hospitality industry. Early in his career, he managed hotel properties in Ohio, Connecticut, and Michigan. He met and married Joyce, his beloved wife of 58 years in Toledo, Ohio in 1966. In 1974, he relocated to Florida with his family, where he continued to excel in managing properties in Naples, Marco Island, and Palm Beach. His career reached its pinnacle during a decade-long tenure as the Resident Manager of the Breakers in Palm Beach, a role that showcased his exceptional leadership and commitment to excellence.
John also served his country honorably in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve for four years. Beyond his professional and military achievements, he was a devoted movie enthusiast with an encyclopedic knowledge of the Academy Awards and classic films spanning from the 1930s to today.
He was predeceased by his wife Joyce and is survived by his sons Jeff (Carrie) and Jason (Catherine), as well as his cherished grandchildren Maggie, Meri Claire, and Jason Jr.
A memorial service will be arranged at the Jacksonville National Cemetery to honor John's life and legacy.
John will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and loving nature. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
