John was predeceased by his parents, James and Grace Brodie, and his sister Mary. John is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Bonnie F. Brodie and his two sons Russell (Deborah) and Robert (Gretchen), and his sister, Alice Sykes. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Morgan, Alex, Cooper, Mackenzie, and Ashton.
A graduate of Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1961, John spent a good protion of his life working a small family farm on Dewey Street in Churchville, New York. He later transitioned to the production lines of Eastman Kodak where he retired after working 19 years. Never willing to truly leave farming behind, John also worked part-time in the produce sections of Wegmans and later at Winn-Dixie after moving to Jacksonville. John was a devoted husband and father. Friends and family meant everything to him, and he was always there to help someone in need. He had a very kind heart and quick wit and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In December 2015, many are aware that John suffered a debilitating brain injury that left him in the supervised care of a nursing home facility in Jacksonville, Florida. The family is extremely grateful to all of the doctors, nurses, aides, and staff that took such wonderful care of him over these last several years and truly became a part of our extended family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either the Brain Injury Association of America (biausa.org) to assist others suffering from brain injuries, their family caregivers, and the medical research needed for improved treatments or to the Haiti Nursing Foundation (haitinursing.org) to support and further the education of those that took such compassionate care of him in his final days.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held at Maplegrove Cemetery on Dewey Street in Churchville, New York in June 2021.
