after courageously battling the latter stages of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease.) He passed away in the arms of his devoted wife at their home.
Born in Brownsville, PA April 3, 1948, the son of Abner Jackson and Leora Moore Liggett, his only sibling was Abner Jackson (Buddy) Liggett Jr., deceased. Jeff lived most of his life in Washington County, PA.
In addition to Laura, his wife of nearly 46 years, he is survived by his beloved children Jeffery D. Liggett, Carrie Lynn (Matthew) Lutz and Inza (Kenneth) Duchi; grandchildren Madison Elizabeth (Philipp) Luchsinger Lutz, Callahan Matthew Lutz, Lillian Inza Duchi and Alexander Jackson Lutz.
During the last quarter of his life, Jeff became a devoted follower of Jesus, advising his family to "walk more closely to the path that Jesus walked." Many who knew him are quick to say he was patient, considerate, trustworthy, even-tempered and reliable.
Jeff loved the outdoors. Among his fondest childhood memories were summers on his grandparents' West Middletown, PA Farm, especially Sundays "when all the cousins would come out." He considered himself fortunate to have enjoyed horseback rides in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, when he lived at the foot of Mt. Manitou, Colorado Springs and managed a small horse farm. Rides through vast, remote areas of Wyoming a midst herds of antelope and horses, to stake claims as a land surveyor was an experience he recollected with great pleasure.
Soft spoken and of a gentle nature, yet fearless and strong minded, Jeff was one to diffuse and subdue. He was known to give people the benefit of the doubt. To say Jeff was a motorcycle enthusiast is an understatement. His friend Bruce said he traded his 4 legged ride for a 2 wheeled one. He wrote songs-lyrics and melodies- about family and experiences, played guitar and enjoyed Blues music.
In 1966 upon graduation from McGuffey High School, Claysville, PA Jeff enlisted in US Marine Corp. He served 4 years active duty, 18 months of which in Vietnam with the Third Marine Division, First Marine Air wing.
He held an Associate Degree in Mining Technology from Pennsylvania State University. Not one to turn his back on hard work, Jeff turned three shifts as a coal miner, and later, a mine examiner. He labored at Pittsburgh Coal Company's Lake Portal Mine, which he described as wet from April to July 1976. After that he worked for Consolidation Coal Company and then Beth Energy, where he developed legs of steel from walking long underground passageways at the Marianna Mine, Marianna, PA. From there Jeff was a first surveyor then a hydrologic technician for the Army Corp of Engineers, Pittsburgh District.
Jeff and Laura retired to Palm Coast, Florida in 2017, where he enjoyed the beach, riding his motorcycle and playing pickleball.
