Hanscom, James Nelson, 89, of Jacksonville passed away March 27, 2016 at his residence. James “Jim” was born on July 25, 1926 at Broomfield, a peanut farm in Surry County, Virginia to the late Roger Libby and Edna Houser Hanscom. James served in the US Army during WWII stationed in Japan. He was co-founder of Audio Fidelity in Richmond and The Audio Center in Roanoke, Va. He was a descendent of the Hanscom boat builders of Kittery, Maine, therefore, his love of sailing in the waters in and around Richmond and Jacksonville in one of a number of small sailing crafts that he built in his backyard. Jim was preceded in death by siblings, Virginia H Boykin, John E. Hanscom and Mary H. Gwaltney. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 47 years, Alma; step-son, Larry Vance (Donna) of Christiansburg, Va; grandchildren, Matthew Vance and Jennifer VanSprouse; 4 great-grandchildren of Richmond, Va; a number of nieces and nephews in Jacksonville, Fl and Richmond, Va. There will be a private service at a later date in Virginia. In memory of James, the family would welcome contributions to Community Hospice, American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. Neptune Society is in charge of his arrangements.
