Howard “Howie” B. Berinato Jr., 76, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, May 24, 2026, at Restoration at West Gate, with family by his side. He was born on April 30, 1950, in Wappingers Falls, New York, to the late Howard and Evelyn Berinato. Howie attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Wappingers Falls.
On April 13, 1991, he married the love of his life, Linda Berinato, who has been waiting for him in Heaven. On this special day, Howie became a father to four children. “Stepfather” is not the description for the man Howie was to Linda’s children. He can best be referred to as “The Father Who Stepped Up.”
Howie worked for New York Trap Rock in Poughkeepsie, NY, until retirement. He was a proud member of Local 445 Teamsters Union in Newburgh, NY. After retirement, Howie and Linda moved to Hastings, Florida, where they remained until Linda’s death in 2024. Howie then moved to Spartanburg, SC, where he resided at Restoration at West Gate Assisted Living Facility.
Howie was predeceased by his wife, Linda S. Berinato; his parents, Howard and Evelyn Berinato; his brother, Louis Berinato; his sister, Sheila Smith; his brothers-in-law’s, Donald Rowe and John Di Stefano.
Howie leaves behind so many who loved him and whom he loved with all his heart: his children, Clifford Scheiner (Dana) of Hastings, FL; Michael Scheiner (Rachel) of Hyde Park, NY; Linda Kilpatrick (Michael) of Highland, NY; and Melissa Morrill (Damian) of Jonesville, SC. He is also survived by his sister, Sherry Rowe of Washingtonville, NY; brother-in-law, Robert Smith of Wappingers Falls, NY; brother-in-law, Gary Di Stefano (Carol) of Staten Island, NY; sister-in-law, Karen Frick (Wayne) of Sherman, CT; and sister-in-law, Debra Masson (John) of Palm Coast, FL.
Howie cherished his grandchildren with all of his heart: Amanda Samples (Mitchel) of Hastings, FL; Michael Scheiner Jr. of Hyde Park, NY; Christopher Scheiner of Hyde Park, NY; Ashley Soto (Isaias) of Spartanburg, SC; Brian Scheiner of Hyde Park, NY; Samantha Scheiner of Hastings, FL; Alex Morrill of Gaffney, SC; and Salem Kilpatrick of Highland, NY.
“Grapa” was also adored by his great-grandchildren, Athena Webber-Morrill and Jackson Soto.
The family would like to thank the nurses of Family Hospice for the care and compassion shown to Howie and his family during his final days. A special thank you also goes to “his girls” of first shift at Restoration at West Gate, who considered him their grandpa as well. The care and compassion from the caregivers made a tremendous difference in his comfort during his final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Howard’s name to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Family and friends are welcome to celebrate the lives of Howard and Linda Berinato together on June 1, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at New Beginnings Church in Pacolet, SC.
