George Alton Booth Jr.

The son of George Alton Booth Sr. and Mary Waite Booth, he was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1952 as the second of six children.

Upon graduating Cleveland Heights High School, George enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he began his career in telecommunications. He would go on to work for many of the big companies and even started his own side hustle, Aurora Communications.

While living in Beverly, Massachusetts, George met Martha, his wife of 47 years. Over the years they have lived in CA, VT, NH and FL, making new friends wherever they went. George was a very congenial guy, befriending strangers everywhere he found an opportunity.

A perpetual volunteer and force for good until the very end, his civic pride, community engagement and strong work ethic were a great influence on his two daughters, who went on to establish careers as a public health civil servant and a public school educator. In his spare time taught reading and never missed a a chance to donate at a blood drive.

George was also heavily involved with Episcopal church communities throughout his adult life, beloved in multiple parishes in New Hampshire and Florida. He sang enthusiastically in the church choir, taught sunday school, and maintained a decades-long involvement with the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, president of his local chapter at the time of his death. He was known for the personally-constructed wooden faith chests that he designed and distributed to newly baptized parishioners, eventually making kits available so others could construct their own.

The man was always moving, preferably forward towards accomplishing whatever he thought needed to be done, ever the problem-solver. George loved being outside, gardening wherever he lived (growing pumpkins for whomever he could find that wanted one). In his boat era, George enjoyed cruising around Florida.! He loved music, especially singing and playing the guitar. George devoured books and enjoyed thoughtful discussions, known widely for the courage of his deeply-held convictions. He could also be light-hearted and silly, famously creating an epic list of nicknames for his daughters, grandchildren, and dogs.

George will be deeply missed by his family and community. He is preceded in death by his parents George Sr. and Mary, and his sister Linda. He is survived by his wife Martha Cook Booth; his daughter Hillary, her husband Joshua and their daughters, Daphne and Alayna and son Joshua, Jr.; his daughter Emily, her husband Danny and their sons Aedan, Malcolm and Jameson; his brother Jim; his sister Ann; his brother Tom; and his sister Susan.

Family and friends are invited to attend a service to celebrate George’s life at 2pm at St. John’s Cathedral in Jacksonville, FL on August 29, 2026; reception onsite to follow.
