Dorothy Ann Hopkins

Dorothy was born in Bethel, Alaska to Indian Service teachers, Elizabeth and Elwin Dell who predeceased her. The family lived in various places in the Territory of Alaska, leaving for the last time, in 1957 by driving down the Alcan Highway. Although Dorothy lived in Bucks County PA since 1965, much of her heart remained in “The Great Land”.

Once venturing to the “lower 48”, her father went to work for government services. His employment required a variety of moves to places such as Morocco and the Philippines. Thus, Dorothy attended high school on a Naval Air Station in Morocco. They were in Subic Bay when the build-up for Viet Nam occurred. Thus, they returned to the United States, settling in Santa Clara, CA. Dorothy continued with her education by earning a BA in Secondary Education at Rider College and her master’s degree in human services from Lincoln University.

Her career included teaching high school English, being the Administrative Assistant for a children’s agency, Secretary to the Headmaster of George School (a Quaker Boarding School) and serving as a secretary in Central Bucks school district. She also served as President of Professional Secretaries International local chapter and at one point, was named Secretary of the Year. Even after retirement she found great joy working part time for Central Bucks School District.

Her cherished husband, Ray Hopkins, predeceased her in November of 2000. During their time together, they traveled extensively in their Roadtrek van camper, visiting nine of the Canadian provinces and every single state (except Hawaii) in the US. Dorothy also served as International Secretary for Roadtrek International for 3 years. She continued to be active in the Roadtrek International camper club after his death. She also visited Florida for extended periods of time in the winter and then became a full-time resident in 2005.

In her retirement, she embarked on several solo adventures as well. One of which was a return to her beloved Alaska one last time. Other trips included traveling up and down the east coast, visiting with family. It was during one of these adventures in which she discovered Greenville SC. She was very fond of Greenville’s many cultural activities and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Thus, in 2009 she packed up, sold her home and made the move.

Dorothy was a woman of absolute faith and Loved our Lord with her whole heart. She was she was active in Doylestown United Methodist Church, belonging to the choir and the “Flying Solos” group made up of widows and other single women. With a group of Methodists, she also volunteered as a worker for Habitat for Humanity. In Greenville she was active with the Maudlin Senior Center and the actives of both the First Baptist Church of Maudlin and the Maudlin Methodist Church.

She is survived by her sister-in-Law, Karen Hein, MD, her brother-in-law Robert (Bob) Louis, and several nieces and nephews. Both her brother, Ralph Dell, MD and her sister Mary Louis, preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held at Mauldin Methodist Church, 100 E. Butler Rd, Mauldin SC on September 16, 2026: visiting starts at 1:00 PM, Service at 2:00 PM and light refreshment after. Interment will be at Beulah Cemetery in Doylestown PA.
