Dave was born January 30, 1936, in Kingsville, TX. Dave had a full life and lived in many parts of the United States. His brilliance qualified him as a member of MENSA, led him to a successful career as a computer scientist, and instilled in him a love of knowledge. Many of his friends and family would have conversations with him about science, literature, music and technology, but few of us could keep up with him. He knew just how far to take the conversation, usually at the exact time our eyes would start glazing over.
His wife Polly was the love of his life. He loved Polly deeply and was her biggest cheerleader, always supporting and encouraging her to do the work that she loves to do, helping others. Their love was epic and they showed us all how to be kind and loving in a relationship. To share their marriage experience with others, Dave created a workshop that he and Polly would give to groups around the world, where people learned about “waffles and spaghetti” and how to love one another through the 12 Traditions.
Dave had a deep love for spending time outdoors, especially the mountains. He enjoyed hiking, backpacking, kayaking, camping, rock climbing - anything to be in nature. He was known to spend months at a time living in a tent, and to him that was part of living life to the fullest. He cherished the backpacking trips he made with friends and family.
Dave was a long time member of a 12 Step Fellowship. He died with 46 years of sobriety, living the finest life he had ever known. In this Fellowship, Dave touched many lives, leaving a legacy for others through his mentorship, sharing his story, and by his living example. With Polly, Dave traveled the world sharing his experience in recovery, touching the lives of an untold number of people all over the world.
Dave is survived by his wife Polly Pistole, daughter Kimmerle Pistole, grandsons Rusty Daniels and Benjamin Johnston, stepsons Russ Lee and James Lee and their families, and many loving friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Guy and Nina Mae Pistole, his brother Gilbert Pistole, and his son Michael Pistole.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Dave on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at the Aspire Church San Marco, 1435 Atlantic Blvd, Jacksonville, FL, 32207. The service will be streamed online at https://aspirejax.org/media/watch-online/.
