Conrad, Connie, Mr. Hopkins, Pop.... He was known by many and loved by all.
Conrad never had any biological children but helped raise 10 with his wife of 45 years, Karen, who went on to be with the Lord in January 2020. He passed on what would've been her 83rd birthday. He is preceded in death by his son Anthony Melton. He is survived by his other son, Carl Carter, daughter Tammy Melton, and granddaughter Sabrielle Melton.
Conrad was a quiet man, but a man of unwavering faith in God. Anyone who knew Conrad would tell you, if you looked up the definition of Christ-like, you'd see a picture of him.
He loved sports more than one could imagine. He wanted to be a sports journalist after graduating from Chowan University but his stutter sadly stopped him. Nonetheless, Conrad could be found reading the newspaper or watching his favorite sports on TV, management football, baseball, and basketball. He would cheer on his favorite teams with great enthusiasm.
He worked at Colin and Aikman for 40 years, an automotive interior fabric factory, which lead to his extensive hearing loss. It's also where he met Karen. The two moved to Florida in 2001 with the last two children they raised, Christopher and Sabrielle Melton, and there he worked at Walmart for 14 years. He retired only 6 short years ago.
Sabrielle, the last of the 10 kids he raised, moved back to Florida to care for him in March of 2022. She said, "He was there for me when I needed it, I am grateful that I got to return the favor."
Services will be held at Beulah Baptist Church Tuesday October 3rd at 11am. There will be a meal with Conrad's favorite foods after the service.
An additional service will be held at his home church, Bethel Hill Baptist Church in Roxboro, North Carolina on Saturday October 22nd at 10am.
Both are public services.
