It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bonnie Wood Gauger, a cherished mother, thoughtful grandmother, and dear friend, who departed this world on October 10, 2023, following a courageous battle with cancer. Bonnie was a remarkable woman whose presence brightened the lives of all who knew her.
Born on November 28, 1943, in Philadelphia, PA, Bonnie was the daughter of William and Johanna Wood. She grew up in a close-knit family and developed a deep appreciation for music, her Scottish heritage, and the simple joys of life. Bonnie's love of music and the piano became evident at a young age, when she excelled in music classes and participated in the school choir and band.
After graduating with a degree in music from West Chester State College, Bonnie began her career as an educator. Her career as a music teacher spanned over more than two decades, during which she touched the lives of countless students. However, later in life, Bonnie found a new passion, real estate where she excelled at selling properties in Illinois, Northern Virginia and Florida. Her commitment to hard work and dedication to her clients earned her the honor of being one of Virginia’s top real estate agents, achieving the million-dollar club recognition on several occasions.
Bonnie's love story began when she met the love of her life, Jack Gauger. They shared a deep and enduring love, celebrating 37 years of marriage together. Their union was a testament to the strength of their connection and the joy they brought into each other's lives.
As a dedicated mother, Bonnie lovingly raised three children, Colin (Patty), Jacqueline (Jerry), and Heather (Jeff), instilling in them the values of kindness and empathy, as well as love of the arts and the importance of a good education. Her family was her greatest source of pride and joy, and she found fulfillment in their achievements and happiness. She provided them with a foundation of love, support, and life's valuable lessons. Her children remember her as a constant source of encouragement.
In her role as a grandmother, Bonnie enjoyed her time with her five grandchildren, Grace, Jack, Hailey, Jillian, and Hope, who brought endless joy into her life, and she reveled in every moment spent with them.
Bonnie is predeceased by her husband, John D. (Jack), her parents, William and Johanna, her siblings May Steckley, Margaret Stumpo, Johanna Schot, William J. Wood Jr., and David Wood.
Bonnie lived unapologetically as herself and her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her best. Her love of a good margarita, English Breakfast Tea, handwritten letters, a good party, kind words, and warm embrace touched everyone she met. She leaves a legacy of love, compassion, and strength that will continue to inspire and guide her family and friends for generations to come.
A memorial service to celebrate Bonnie's life will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea in New Smyrna Beach on Saturday November 18, 2023, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National MS Society, a cause that was close to Bonnie's heart.
