Dr. Stewart was called to ministry while attending Fordson High School (Dearborn, Michigan) and began preaching while a student at Muskingum College (New Concord, Ohio). He graduated from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and served churches in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. Twenty-five years after ordination, he earned a Doctor of Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary (Chicago), and eventually honorably retired as Pastor Emeritus of the Norwood Presbyterian Church (Cincinnati).
In 1995, Dale and Wilma, his wife of 42 years, retired to Florida and, eight years later, celebrated their 50th anniversary at Dunnellon Presbyterian Church. But a leisurely life of golf, gardening, and genealogy was postponed as a fourth “G” (God) called him to serve as interim pastor for eleven congregations, and he also served as ship’s chaplain on several sea cruises. Valuing relationships with people of other faiths, he founded the Florida chapter of The Interfaith Alliance. Dale is predeceased by Wilma (his wife of 55 years) in 2008, and by his parents, Glenn and Vivian (Yoder) Stewart of Dearborn, Michigan.
In 2010, Dale re-married, Louise James of Fairfield, Florida and re-retired to John Knox Village. He joined the First Congregational Church of Orange City, immersed himself in genealogy and was a founding member of the JKV Family History Club. A direct descendant of Jacob Hochstetler, he reveled in presentations about the “Hochstetler Massacre” of 1757.
Dale is survived by Louise James, by three adult sons – Timothy (“Stu”), Douglas (“Doogie”), and Richard and daughter-in-law, Debra (“De”) – all of Dunnellon, Florida. Dale’s sister, Donna Silverman, resides in Traverse City, Michigan. He is also survived by a granddaughter – Amber (and husband Lanny) Prentice of Tuscola, Texas, a grandson – John Dale (and wife Jessica) Stewart of Great Falls, Montana, and by five great-grandchildren – Abigail, Cassara, Jaxson, Caydence, and Nolan.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 3rd, at Dunnellon Presbyterian Church, 20641 Chestnut St., Dunnellon, FL 34431. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice, and condolences may be addressed to the family in care of the church.
